I am here…
I went swimming this morning, outside! My friend’s neighborhood pool. I walked into the water and looked up at the sky and it’s vast expanse. I saw cloud formations, I felt warm water, I felt a bit of sensory over load and then it happened! My brain CLICKED in, “Stop this wandering around you are HERE, in the water to do business, swim!” I snapped out of that visual panorama and located myself. “Im in the water, swim!” #location
As I warmed up and began to IDENTIFY what was working. Arms? Legs? Lungs,? Breathing? Was this a good day or a bad day in the water? With in 5 mins I had identified my current capability. (To reach my goals I have to be consistent. To be consistent I have to dial the engagement up and down.) Then I put a plan in place. With athletics and age, you bring a plan and then get moving and see if your body can support that plan on that day or do you need a Plan ?. The older you are the more you learn to modify in life. Same as in life!
The secret? Identify and THEN set expectations.
You see you will NOT grow if you set the wrong EXPECTATIONS! Growth really occurs when you don’t fail yourself and you stay consisten. One of the best ways to avoid failure? Set small expectations! Small steps, Small goals, and small successes…Not too much, not a burden, not something that overwhelms and is abandoned.
I see this expectation issue as the main cause of Quitting!
Remember as kids on a road trip with in a short time we’re asking, ARE WE THERE YET? We’re still asking! We go to the gym expecting it to be easier today after yesterday’s crushing workout. We jump on the scale butt naked expecting it to be down because we passed on the cookie. We think by Friday all of our goals should be met! Disappointed we crash and burn!
Get in the water, warm up and then set expectations on that particular swim. Some days you’ll get out deeply relieved it’s over and you met your “goal.” Other days you’ll cruise past that goal. Either way, YOU SHOWED UP, YOU DID'N’T QUIT!
