Not a week goes by that I don’t get emails from Keto-Influencers. I follow so many. Most lead off with a Keto Sweet or Treat. Matter a fact many seem to be showing off the Keto treats as a teaser. The problem appears we are marketing Keto-Treats-n-Sweets to a population that TREATS themselves for everything! Don’t get me off on the BirthDAYS that now take up a whole weeks…We’ lost sight of the BOUNDARIES needed around some foods.
You all know my most recent chapter in my 5-year Keto journey. Weight gain and constant hunger. When I removed the daily consumption of artificial sweeteners I stopped craving all the time, and now I see I hadn’t been hungry, I’d been craving because of the Sugar-free gum I was chewing in excess.
I know our Keto message is to show people this can be good food, simple meals, and we don’t have to be deprived. I also know most can’t get away with too much keto-indulgence, yet I think we are sending a message that “you CAN have your keto cake and eat it too!” and then people find themselves in a struggle again, or with weight gain on a high calorie diet. Confusion sets in and with that comes frustrations. After all the picture was showing off an amazing Keto Cake! “I thought that meant I could have it?”
Are you struggling? Are you following a Keto-Influencer that leads off their marketing with a sweet or a treat? Are those treats daily indulgences in your life?
This might be the problem. Please forgive us for the mixed signals. Yes Keto Sweets and Treats are amazing and they are just right for that special occasion.
I can see the confusion, you see, I use to eat cake for breakfast or maybe even cookies. Certainly I had no trouble with the 10am cupcake or frosted donut. I loved my sweets. Seeing Keto cakes and cookies means I can simply substitute them while on the keto diet, right? No not right.
A ketogenic approach is a metabolic shift from being a carb/sugar burner to a fat burner. We lower our carbs significantly to provoke our metabolism to switch over to our fat storage for fuel. This gives us a few amazing benefits. #1 Suppressed appetite, we’ve removed the foods that kept us hungry and craving all the time. #2 Renewed energy and access to our stored energy. That’s Keto! It also helps regulate blood sugar and reduce the need for insulin. That’s Keto!
Save the keto cakes and cookies for special occasions. Pull back from food as your appetite diminishes and heal. This way of eating is a powerful tool. That’s Keto!
