Most Keto treats were devised so that you could arrive at a party or the 4th of July with something in hand that you could eat too! They were put together to allow you to stay compliant, after all it was a “once -in-a-while” treat, not a daily occurrence. What started out as a good idea for special occasions has become something we treat ourselves too ALL THE TIME.
Are you still using food to treat yourself?
Are you still using food to cope?
Are you still using food to provide you with entertainment?
Are you still looking for something you’re in the mood for?
Are you Keto and STILL hungry all the time?
Is it hunger or CRAVINGS because of the amount of sweeteners you are eating?
Is it hunger or cravings?
You see I was hungry all the TIME! To short cut that problem, I’d chew gum, sugar-free Juicy Fruit. It’s so good, I even hesitate sharing that with you. I popped it when i wanted something sweet. Then I popped it again when the sweetness ran out. Then I popped it when I dealt with something hard. Then I popped 2 or 3 pieces at a time..Then, I went looking for a MEAL because NOW I was really hungry.
I MISUNDERSTOOD I was actually dealing with cravings NOT hunger. Here’s how I figured it out…
I decided I had developed a problem with gum, (Ya think?). I decided to give it up for a week (*it made me nervous to think of going longer.) I got my community to hold me accountable and did it. Surprisingly, within 3-4 day I actually wasn’t hungry all the time. I thought about this for a few days and I REALIZED I’d been craving from the sweeteners, not hungry.
On the Sunday of that week of gum-free- commitment I was driving home from church and I decided, “Well, I’m hungry. I’ll stop off at the store and get something I’m in the mood for. Then I heard myself ask myself, “Are you really hungry?" Monday through Friday you’re not hungry at this hour, is this hunger?” (*Great question.) My thoughts continued, “SO…if you’re hungry just make some steamed eggs when you get home.” My reaction was startlingly swift: “I DON’T WANT EGGS I WANT POPPERS!” Then that wise, yet arrogant sounding voice said, “See YOU ARE NOT REALLY HUNGRY.”
If there are regular treats there are probably regular CRAVINGS for food. So many still struggle with Keto because today’s Keto Culture shows off beautifully made treats meant for occasional consumption not daily occurrences.
*I’ve watched Keto rise over these last few years. I follow so many influencers, authors, cooks and coaches. So many lead their marketing with beautiful looking treats and I always think to myself, “do they eat this all the time?” In my life, I simply cannot. I have a life-long attraction to sweetness and once it get’s into my day, it dances in my brain until I give in. “In some people, sweeteners cause cravings.” I’m one of the some people. Are you too?
