I had a word of encouragement for a friend. It involved “HITTING THE TARGET”.
In High School I had an archery class I had to attend for PE. It looked easy enough in the movie they showed us. I was rather excited to play with bows and arrows!!! Get a bow, get an arrow, load the arrow, pull back the bow, release the string and hit the target, right? Oh if it were really that easy. Reminds me of diet, oh! If it were really THAT easy, right?
First they strap your forearm with this weird guard, because your wrist gets thwacked.
Then they help you get a bow with the right tension.
I remember pulling back the bow and it took ALL my strength and then I had to HOLD MY STRENGTH, while I aimed, which was impossible.
The bow and arrow wobbled because I could not hold my own strength still, I had NO ENDURANCE with holding my strength.
All my effort then turned to sighting the target, and the bullseye and releasing the arrow, I even closed one eye, like they do in the movies.
Under the pressure from the tension it was hard to concentrate, let alone be still AND focus on the bullseye, I decided to just try and get the arrow on the target...anywhere. (I think we all start out there.) Concentrating on steadying myself, and keeping my aim, was huge while holding that arrow in a pulled back state.
I remember thinking to myself, “this is hard, I don’t like it, I don’t want to play anymore!” Then I released the arrow, the first one only went a short distance, I didn’t have enough strength to pull back far enough to create the power to shoot farther. Just a short distance away my arrow was lodged in the ground, and I had to get it on the target that seemed SO FAR AWAY to pass the class? Was this even fair? (asks a 16 yr old student with a whining voice to herself.)
Now I had to teach myself HOW TO DO SOMETHING HARD AND HIT THE TARGET.
With more determination and AWARENESS of the rules of flight I mounted up for a more successful shot.
I lined myself up, and took into account what was going to be required of me for success.
#1 Gather MORE strength in pulling the arrow back
#2 TAKE AIM and HOLD THAT STRENGTH
#3 STILL myself AND sharpen my focus on that target
Archery is just like Dieting. If being a success is the TARGET, you’ll learn so much from your 1st shot and your LACK of understanding, your lack of strength, your inability to focus under pressure and then you will make a choice. Develop yourself or fail. Same with dieting.
#1 It takes a Target
#2 It takes STRENGTH under pressure
#3 It takes intentional AIM
Over and over and over again. Don’t give up! You can become a success.
