I returned to the pool in Feb. I slipped into the water and swam 50 lengths. That's 1,250 yds. Then I repeated it 2 days later. Then I swam a mile, 72 lengths. I repeated it for a few weeks. Then I decided I wanted to go 100 lengths, got there and started repeating it. It was a big mental leap because swimming is really silent, just the stroke and your breath. It's done slowly and calmly....and it takes forever!!!
One day I felt a desire to do something really BIG in the pool. So I swam 2 miles, 140 lengths. I felt so accomplished...and tired.
Exercise goals that are goals just out of reach CAN BE ACHIEVED in short order. I found this to be really inspiring. 50 lengths, 70 lengths, 100, 140, 150....and yesterday I swam 2 hours and did 3 miles which ends up being 212 lengths. I was so sore, so tired and yet TRIUMPHANT!
I make it a point to swim twice a week.. no more. A short swim on Mondays, and a long swim on Wednesdays. (I bike the other days). I'm committed to exercise because it keeps me in ketosis and....it gives me a huge boost of triumph!!!
Do you feel triumphant on a daily basis? YOU can....Ask my friend Salie Johnson how she feels this morning after having been out late last night and at the gym at the crack of dawn this morning, really JUST keeping her promise....Ask Josey Sumner who is up and walking the dog before work! Ask Christine Wolfe who just fired up her new fitness tracker how she feels!!! Ask Sharon McKistry how she feels having found and climbed steps and suggested she could pull out her rollator and walk the mall!!! ASK THEM!
Small consistent swims led to that BIG swim...But that's not the dream...the dream is BIGGER, but can only be reached one session at a time! Next stop...250 lengths...maybe after I rest up from yesterday...
Start small, start simple, a walk at dawn...A walk at dawn UP a hill. Raining? Hit your stairs! Slip down to the basement and the exercise equipment. Get it done EARLY...so it's done! Push yourself til you sweat! In the beginning it's all about SHOWING UP and NAILING it...as you gather momentum, then...we'll add to duration and intensity.
Swimming leads to dreaming...
