Our next step is always the most important step!!!
This past Saturday I climbed a mountain. I haven't been exercising much so this mountain was a real challenge. I lagged behind. My young friend made up her own path when there was a tree blocking the switchback...she just took us straight up. My heart was hammering, I was soaked, out of breath, and my legs were burning, so to shift away from what felt like suffering I started to concentrate on each step. Step, step, step, step, step. The only way out of this horrible place was THE NEXT STEP and a step at a time. Step, step, step. I placed my poles and stepped.
Eventually we reached the summit BUT ALONG THE WAY We'd gotten off track, the journey took a harder direction, harder than I was prepared for...and...we were basically LOST! I focused on the next step, because in truth, I knew the mountain would guide us. I knew enough about the mountain and what I was doing that we'd get ourselves back on track, but I still had to take that next step to do that. With a pause we recalibrated our direction based on our destination and worked our way back to the real path.. I wasn't alone either, we walked together.
Since that walk I've been in contact with 2 people who have been OFF TRACK, but still on the mountain! Things are HARD, they're a bit LOST and CHALLENGED, but have not gone off the "diet mountain"...
The advice is always going to be the same, I believe with all my heart the NEXT STEP is community. This is when you NEED your people! People will keep you connected to what you want to do. When we get lost, we are isolated or we are embarrassed AND we isolate.
I also noticed when I was taxed to the max I could NOT do much else but step. I couldn't walk faster, record things, stop and take pictures, engage in conversation...I was only strong enough to stay with them. I'd assumed I could easily just climb a very challenging mountain. I could not.
I needed their encouragement, their company (I'd have turned back) and their energy to re-energize because I really wanted to get to the top and share that view with them!
I want to share the journey and the view with you too!
